THE PROCESS STARTS WITH YOU...
To find our wood, we rely on local landowners to let us know when they have a tree that has to come down or needs to come down due to safety or health concerns.
Once the tree has been taken down, we'll bring it to our mill, or if it's too big to move, we might even bring our portable mill on site to cut the tree in to slabs.
After the tree has been cut into slabs, we put it in one of our barns to dry. Typically we'll let our wood air dry for anywhere from 1-4 years before it goes in to the kiln to complete the drying process.
The kiln completes the drying process by lowering the moisture content of the slab down to a workable level. This process could take a few weeks or a few months depending on the size of the wood.
When the wood comes out of the kiln it will look rather rough and have spots all over it. The spots are where the kiln pulled all the moisture out of the wood. The moisture pools up in these spots then evaporates. Don't worry, they go away once the slab gets flattened or planed.
